The glorification of hierarchy is plain to see in the American Great Seal and the accompanying Latin text, Annuit Cœptis. The implication is that God favours the undertakings of the American state. But what limits are there on those undertakings when God is behind you? When disasters and conflict often result in the enrichment and power consolidation of those at the top of the pyramid, ancient mottos such as these give us pause to reflect on the inclinations of our modern Pharaohs.
